WIP Wednesday - Happy Pills

WIP Wednesday at Freshly PiecedA Lovely Year of Finishes

Happy Wednesday! I made lots of progress in the last week. Here are my current WIPs:

In early April I set my lovely year of finishes goal to make the Happy Hour quilt by Elizabeth Hartman. I knew it was a lofty goal but that I would be able to get lots done at the Stash Bash. I talked about my stash bashing experience here.

I brought some cut rectangles and translated them into this:
Happy Pills
You can see my rockin' pants and slippers in this photo.

Sewing curves is a real b*tch but its oddly addictive. Once I got them into rectangles things went much faster. I finished up the top and the back at 3:30 in the morning on Saturday.

Happy Pills back
Here's the back. I modified it a bit from the EH design. I wanted it to look like floating pills. I couldn't help throwing in one oddball block.

And then I started quilting on Sunday. Chris (THE frecklemama) and Kelly (Kelbysews) helped me pick out this perfect quilting design. Doesn't it remind you of the synaptic cleft between neurons?...oh no... just me?
Happy Pills Quilting
I hope to get this finished by the end of the week. Our guild has a sewing day this Sunday.

I also started making Sew Sweetness's aeroplane bag. I decided to QAYG because Elizabeth did. Pretty good reason.

I pulled my color palette from the velocity print. Tako da octopus is the star of this side.

Tako!
I think the colors in this picture are more true to life.

Here is the other side. I wanted to see what it would look like with a triangle. The piecing is a little crazy and busy. Is this way too busy? I dunno. I think I will like it better once it gets fully assembled.

Linking up with the rest of you crazies at Freshly Pieced. Also, I joined Instagram. Follow me @sewhungry. And is anyone else still stubbornly just using google reader? I am using it until the last second.

  1. It was so fun watching you work on this last weekend. I didn't get to see the back! So I am glad you posted it. I am glad I wasn't the only one who hadn't joined instagram. :D

  2. I'm not going to gush over your Happy Pills quilting anymore. I think I did that sufficiently in person. But the Aeroplane bag? Come on! That's insane! It looks so awesome!

And I'm really grumpy about the google reader situation. I've tried Bloglovin and Feedly, and I kind of hate them both. There's a chance I might learn to tolerate Feedly, but ugh.

  3. I'm using Feedly, and I've got it set up so it mostly resembles reader. It has a few issues, but whenever I email them with it, the issue mysteriously resolves after a couple of days, so yay for that.

Your Happy Pills quilt is amazeballs. You must know that. And the quilting comment cracks me up. :) And your bag is totally fabulous as well, wtf!! That Velocity print is one of my favorite prints of all time.

  4. I need to do something with the kraken. Preferably something I can use for the wedding in some way. I love the quilt (and I'm still trying to figure out Instagram).

  5. When I saw the first picture of the bag for some reason I thought it was a kind of giant circular quilt complete with massive octopus... I was impressed! Then I realised it was actually bag sized...that's not to say I am any less impressed it's still just as cute and the pill quilt is ace too!

  6. I think you will love the aeroplane bag -- it is a big bag, good for an entire weekend at quilt camp!

  7. Your Happy Pills quilt looks fantastic! I am jealous of people who get to go on sewing retreats. :) I'm glad Stash Bash was a success. And NO patchwork tote is too busy. I think you'll end up with a cute useable bag.

I've made a decision that I'll use Google Reader until it literally won't load one day in July. And then I will figure out an acceptable solution. I am pretty much waiting for the nerds to work this out for me: won't someone put out a free product that looks and acts almost exactly like Reader, between now and July? I think yes.
