Zakka Style SAL: Week 24 (last week) nesting boxes

Zakka Style Sew Along

This is the last week of the Zakka Style SAL. I missed the last few weeks but am back for the last project, fabric nested boxes. They were pretty easy to put together but too much hand sewing for my impatient self.

nested boxes
I used some old fabrics from my friend K's grandmother to make some Christmas boxes

Here are some close ups:

Small box. I just love the little pineapples. I put them on this box upside down oops. Pineapple upside down box, I guess.

Medium box

Large box

All nested and ready for Christmas

Stack em up and ship em out. No wait, I think I'll keep em.

For a review of all my Zakka projects please check out this post.

Philisophical Pfridays: NSFW fabrics?

I found this fabric at Joann's - it is disturbing and possibly be the ugliest fabric ever! Of course I had to take a picture of it and pass it on to you:

I honestly don't know if it is even scrap vomit worthy.

This weekend is more crafting with K from Crafternoon Delight on Sunday. Stay tuned in I will be revealing my finished Scrappysaurus rex along with some other finishes this week. Happy Friday!

Guess what I found this morning about 1 foot away from a regulation chew toy:

RIP little scissors. You served me well.

(A short) WIP Wednesday

I have to give a presentation tomorrow so there is not much time to update you WIP style.

WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced

No you did not hit your head but you are you seeing spinning stars.  Katy at I'm a ginger monkey is hosting a spinning starts QAL. The party starts today so there is still time to join.

I made a foundation paper piecing template here and blogged about it and tested it with icky fabric. Here is my first block with the good stuff:

Spinning stars first block

Later I will post an in depth tutorial including lots of pictures on how I paper pieced this block.

Other WIPs
roller rink quilt
some pillows
September bee blocks
secret stuff

Linking up with Lee over at Freshly Pieced.

Voile-la

My first Voile purchase is from the Little Folks collection by Anna Marie Horner:

From the top:
Diamond mine in citrus
Coloring garden in citrus
Forest hills in sea
Coloring garden in sea
Pastry line in coral
Pastry line in magenta

I got them at Hawethorne Threads on sale! I am excited and scared to try to sew with them because they are so slippery soft. I'll cut into these next crafternoon (well maybe).

A birthday weekend

This weekend was great. Full of sewing, Mellow Mushroom and friends. These are the great birthday gifts I got:

This shirt from K combines two of my favorite things: science and food.

A little washi Alabama applique from S.

Went to Mellow Mushroom my favorite pizza spots in B'ham with a few friends. Here is my cake. K and S made it-
It's a Carcassonne cake! see...

Holy HSTs Batman. I bought a quilty mug. It makes me super happy. It was only $1.50 at Target.

Onward to the sewing. I had a productive crafternoon with K on Sunday. I made progress on the roller rink quilt. All of the block centers are done. Excuse the lighting in this pic the colors are not muddy in person I swear.

Scrappysaurus rex is done, but you don't get to see it yet because I am a big meanie like that. I went with a scrappy stripy binding.

K made a mustache block for Can't grow a mo' sew a mo' charity quilt. I think it is hilarious. Mustache love. Mustache is hard to spell.
Made by K from Crafternoon Delight

The weather was perfect. The dogs were happy. The cats love quilts. My hubs survived his first surgery rotation and doesn't have to go to work until 8am tomorrow. Life is good.

Philisophical Pfridays - The quilt that started it all

I would like to take a few minutes to get nostalgic this Friday. This is the quilt that got me into quilting:

My friend K over at Crafternoon Delight made it as a wedding gift for me. Can you believe this was her first quilt? Her grandma quilts and she helped K out with the construction. It has several types of patchwork blocks including photos of me and my hubby and of our pets we had at the time.

This was our first Halloween together. We went as Walter and Perry from Home Movies. Yeah, we are nerds like that

It also has a custom monogram embroidery in the center.

I got married in May 2010. Leading up to my wedding, K kept telling me it would be the best wedding present we get and I couldn't think of what it was at all. It really was our best present (sorry everyone else but quilts trump all) and it got me into quilting. My husband got me my sewing machine for my birthday exactly 2 years ago!

What was your first quilt you received or made?

Happy Friday, peeps and Happy Birthday/sewing anniversary to me.
