And sometimes I remedy that situation by making them a just-because quilt. This quilt was started at the Stash Bash in 2014 and finished in October 2015 for Cassie. We have both moved away from Alabama where we met and only see one another once a year or so. <br />
<br />
I had been wanting to make a courthouse steps block quilt that has a 2nd lantern pattern to it. Scrappy with lots of different fabrics and colors. The palette was loosely based on one of my favorite fabrics:<br />
<br />
<img alt="Image result for washi print rashida" class="irc_mi" height="200" src="https://i.pinimg.com/564x/26/60/b4/2660b40416895bdf4665b84727fa70b4--timeless-treasures-fabric-masking-tape.jpg" style="margin-top: 0px;" width="145" /> <i>Washi </i>by Rashida Coleman Hale<br />
<br />
Teal and chartreuse, peachy pink and dark gray, and some cool minty greens all mixed together with low volume texty prints.<br />
<br />
Here is a progress shot. This quilt was an exercise in planning. I usually make all the blocks in one go chain piecing for miles. I took a different approach here making one or two blocks at a time and building the color story as I went. And isn't this quaint...my sewing area nice and open with a baby swing nearby. Nowadays I am jailed away behind a gate to keep the tiny people away from the sharp and hot dangers of the sewing nook. <br />
<img class="SzDcob" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYfJigXWEdOYAEjX9dsN1sbCVsvocDm3wqkfTBe8-N6XhY1Miqv8-BpBE46615ggwGU68KgzBoMOlVTUOXchhQpGiRfwY6NDKDxXDjtkTZ-LWF_oEDJ0sJGD0tNmcfrWV-UoJWackhP5o/w547-h971-no/" width="358" /><br />
<br />
Here is the final result. I backed it with a teal minky fabric and bound it in dark gray birds from Violet Craft.<br />
<img class="SzDcob" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy9gyp6uYBht9keZ0tt_T7aQXYsm-WKSu5iOIcgy_nA2m57jxlTSGX-fEgkEfZsk5u18faI1h96Qgn_MviFSnNUKnnPvc8tLqID1QNThJiJY-666JCaK1sZODz75dW090Dwu6mVgr2O0s/w1727-h971-no/" style="transform: translate3d(0px, 0px, 0px) rotate(0deg);" width="640" /><br />
<br />
Here it is in better lighting. I quilted a simple diagonal grid through the center squares. This quilt was already so heavy with seams, batting and minky back I didn't want to overdo the quilting. <br />
<br />

My secret sister, Victoria, loves diving and going to the beach. I decided to make her a beach themed quilt for the final gift to give it to her for Christmas. I asked my bee group, That Stash Bee, for pineapple blocks based on this color palette:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Here are my example blocks. I used white/cream for the center and triangles and blues and turquoise for the rest.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Here are all the blocks put together:<br />
<a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4260150928767438131" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><img class="SzDcob" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJZoRB-nS-m2TF56StRbFzlnOr4OigKR3Kmw736kPgrvNsgp-IwAy_Lbd7TlyxHPSQQmkmokf_PvP9163hQGv9iZyCYgG47d2ohVn5x7B8To7rjIjohoE81zba5lpGpBtQg-dnahcgLmw/w1727-h971-no/" width="640" /><br />
<br />
And here is the final product. I quilted it with figure 8 free motion quilting.<br />
<img class="SzDcob" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgphVReDHmWiIklltNeYXXkHl-mx5xIoDYrbCsdilV447MGpskTdntAKzwx3rOTfKne2K6F9Mkuc5C1hcUkNgKq92CMjCwJElNbYnBYUY_yWA2zqqq5dM6GQjwkpMMbeYuslN_d-HCKkvo/w547-h971-no/" width="360" /><br />

I'm especially proud of the backing which is a representation of the diving flag that I pieced from red and white solids. I bound the quilt in a teal solid to contrast nicely with the back and blend in with the front.<br />
<img class="SzDcob" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh67BtGdCXcWu9NPIuyyCgWixi_K3wBjxnPCNxtwLym2Tk5GNaAh8IT2SVEvzKIR4sn05fmQcC0RcBKEmm_ZbvrhGFOayX0RvjR4B4LcYQ7hJcVVw2ZnCA2xlsEpSzxe5FwxkcpoaL853w/w547-h971-no/" width="360" /><br />
Needless to say, she said it is her favorite bedding and uses it on her bed all the time.<br />

It started with <a href="http://sewhungry.blogspot.com/2013/05/16-patch-wedding.html">Sarah </a>and this time we did it when Jes got married.<br />
<br />
I asked for Arkansas Crossroad blocks in jewel tones with white X's. Cassie, Kim and Sarah all pitched in blocks. I made some blocks and finished the quilt. here is a progress shot of the blocks. I was sewing in the early morning before the boys wake up.<br />
<br />
<img class="SzDcob" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE4AWaei2ey2lmLcAmOI8aiddKjpuc42dtp2x05BqrxKqwyKdDCIGCYO17VK1Nzfw07wUOsvIjv0kxMeoS7L509UpEqw83uc6o2RYzsU_sSf-DX5Lmomm7GJJWvp2Ss2T8PJ0AhKFBlbM/w1727-h971-no/" style="transform: translate3d(0px, 0px, 0px) rotate(0deg);" width="640" /><br />
<br />
Here is the layout. It is so bright and cheery with the contrasting white. I used a red minky fabric for the back to amp up the cuddle factor. <br />
<br />
<img class="SzDcob" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJvfmvpMME6pYVwWSJ1prndku37qDMc_zpJv1GFhWUMm9yyDN-s_NahqNDMnH57VnwIj7-zj6jZjwJDIveA7djHTfMRG1L0EDfk56vAFB7hc2NPCEKFU7_NGuVzSN4IKk1H_kYkMxo8_Q/w1727-h971-no/" style="transform: translate3d(0px, 0px, 0px) rotate(0deg);" width="640" /><br />
<br />
Sadly I don't have a picture of the finished product and I can't recall how I quilted it. We started in September 2015 and I finished it in time to give it to her for our semi-annual <a href="https://sewhungry.blogspot.com/search?q=truffle">truffle shuffle</a> in December.<br />
<br />
<img class="SzDcob" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtZr94k9pdkEWhTNykEZO2nRXEJxGfsvygfZsOrQp_f3uVEzGEkdkxGCyhwzp9ypYrC7X6_FD5w-B0xmlaiqfFmE4_ySNbn3YIJrcwZaB2y937h29UHGQT4N6Ou6VrABoOkmRSsEDLKTU/w1727-h971-no/" style="transform: translate3d(0px, 0px, 0px) rotate(0deg);" width="640" /> <br />
Here is a picture of our truffle making efforts. We usually make between 600-700 chocolate truffles with up to 12 different combinations of chocolate, fillings (pretty heavy handed with the booze here) and coatings. I'm hoping we can arrange another shuffle this winter.Marlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14802017567939327058noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4260150928767438131.post-14658778128821925162017-07-25T13:02:00.001-05:002017-07-25T13:05:33.166-05:00Kabletown Wedding Quilt {A Finished Quilt}Continuing to backlog my quilty finishes from 2015. This is a wedding quilt I made for my mom and step-dad. I started the quilt in May and finished in June. The wedding was early July.<br />
<br />
<img class="SzDcob" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHffIfgfVsig4ZjNjt_qr2bTqgUwoj3nw_OOJGhBa33Bg1ab7E-Zt1Tt_UqN_CPtWgQ7LJ6Q2oA72Ji6WfsYHI0knC0tzZFGABRMGNutmf2saGxuf0QF0VlBtJToj7xAWlzOjSIqcSISU/w1727-h971-no/" style="transform: translate3d(0px, 0px, 0px) rotate(0deg);" width="640" /><br />
<br />
My mom and stepdad love to be outdoors hiking, kayaking, biking etc. They live in a beautiful home overlooking the Appalachian Trail. I wanted to quilt to have a cozy log cabin feel to it.<br />
<br />
I double the size of the mountain block and went scrappy as I tend to do. Here are some of the blocks during production:<br />
<br />
<img class="SzDcob" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXZZrAwdOSHnXfsqGDKDI57kZhx90WRihyphenhyphenLHKETG119XFfJ62O4c9wr8_bHQrKbYLZEZLvCLJiGHO4_H9JR-LXikLk6_7vmQmxhI4oBqLUF_grosnovhVQe0YZEb55Bqi3Lg-lX2_iUiE/w547-h971-no/" style="transform: translate3d(0px, 0px, 0px) rotate(0deg);" width="358" /><br />
<br />
Really big blocks and simple piecing meant that this project moved quickly. That was exactly what I needed seeing as I gave myself very little time and had 3 8 month old kids competing for my attention at the time.<br />
<br />
<img class="SzDcob" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnoQjttpK5u7jaJnlTaA_xWrSnq7qGiHDXMbqsSobGGkoNksTJiGzEMlPjVrjzkrYhoPCOYv3F7dJHgp3adnr6yyqPxNVVMHpD3B-w9q_AdvNs03WaWzXOuS2GNbsU2S3m5C5m6eTelD0/w1727-h971-no/" style="transform: translate3d(0px, 0px, 0px) rotate(0deg);" width="640" /><br />
<br />
I used a red plaid flannel for the backing and quilted a diagonal grid on either side of the points to highlight them.It finished at 96 x 108".<br />
<br />
I love the feeling of the finished product. It is perfect for snuggles in a mountain retreat. I named it Kabletown because I watched a LOT of <i>30 Rock</i> while making this quilt only to realize my mom lives off of a Kabletown road. I took this as a sign that I watched too much <i>30 Rock</i>.Marlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14802017567939327058noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4260150928767438131.post-60470960200070910292017-07-24T10:54:00.000-05:002017-07-25T13:02:49.114-05:00Dots {A Mini Quilt Finish}<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Today's post is all about this lovely specimen: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ain't she a beaut. This quilt was started July 2014 by Kim and I for our friend, C, who not so subtly asked for a quilt.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Kim came to visit so we took a trip to the local quilt shops to get our fabric. This was right around when the indelible fabric line came out and Kim and I really thought the line was perfect for C. We were going to use one of the purple prints as a focal print and then pull complementary fabrics for the rest but the local quilt shops did not have the purple line in stock. So instead we went with the same palette but pulled fabrics from all over including indelible, cotton and steel, art gallery dots, collage.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We went with some really big hexagons and traingles for a quick and easy finish. But the real gem was the quilting. I did an all over loop-de-loop design and snuck in some colorful words into each hexagon. I wonder if she has found them all by now? Aw damn...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I'm going to fill in the backlog of posts. I realized I crave a way to journal my quilting. I couldn't think of a name for this one until after we gifted it. The boy's name is Carson and when his parents were telling the dad's boss what his name was he misheard them and thought they said Tarzan! No one bothered to correct him so now this guy will think they named their son Tarzan for all eternity. Amazing. These colors are quite fitting for baby Tarzan.<br />

Recently I saw a couple of posts on IG of some simple topknot baby hats and I got inspired to try to sew some up. I have never sewn with knits before and had a pretty good idea that this wasn't going to go well. A baby hat is a good place to start though - it is a quick project and babies don't care if their hat looks good or not.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used <a href="http://www.makeit-loveit.com/2014/03/stretchy-baby-hats-with-top-knots-template-included.html">this tutorial</a> and the only knit fabric I had on hand (a very cute bird print). And voila!! Look a hat. It took less than an hour. Probably less than 30 minutes. If you actual know what you are doing you could whip one up in 15.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As a quilter I can deal with blocks that are too small. I get it, my 1/4" seam wasn't accurate and now my blocks are small. But final products that turn out larger than intended...odd. The hat's template pieces were 7.5" at their widest and sewing them together with a 1/4" seam should yield a 7" hat. Nope my hat is 8" wide. I must have pulled the fabric too much when I sewed it together. Oh well. Hopefully my kids will have big heads like their dad. HA! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was too discouraged to make two more hats. I think I'll stick to woven fabrics. Thankyouverymuch. What about you, are you ambidextrous when it comes to sewing with different fabric types or are you a one textile loyalist?</div>

I like really big lap quilts. The kind you can really wrap around your whole body as you veg on the couch. No having to chose between cold toes or cold shoulders.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My best customer, aka my Mom, asked me to make a quilt for her friend. This friend had seen some of my baby quilts and expressed a desire to have her own handmade quilt. My mom gave me little instruction on the design only saying that it should be "lap sized" and "colorful."</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I chose to make some scrappy monochromatic rectangles by sewing scraps together willy-nilly and then cutting it down to 6 x 12" because that is one of the ruler sizes I have. Then I added borders to make 14" square blocks. The colored rectangles were bordered by white/cream/ or gray solids and the neutral rectangles were bordered by colored solids. This was a great scrap buster.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used some black and white prints as well as a pop of purple for the back. My mom's friends all seem to love purple.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I chose a yellow lightning bug print for the binding. I think it contrasts well with the back and adds a bright and sunny finish to the front.</div>

My hubs coworkers threw us a co-ed baby shower a few weeks ago. It was amazing and so many of his co-Interns showed up despite barely knowing us and their busy schedules. I wanted to express my gratitude the best way I know how, handmade gifts of course! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made 6 boxy bags for the six ladies who coordinated the shower. I used a bunch of different fun prints and zippers and let them choose which one they wanted to take home. The <a href="http://kelbysews.blogspot.com/2014/03/boxy-bag-tutorial.html">boxy bag tutorial </a>is a free one by Kelly at Kelbysews. It is very fast and easy. Even if you are afraid of zippers you should try this one out.</div>

I used quilting cotton for the inside and outside fabrics. The outer panels were quilted using some scrap batting. I used a different quilting design on each bag to complement the fabrics. These were pretty soft still and didn't hold their box shape that stiffly. If you want a stiffer bag use heavier interfacing and a heavier home dec weight fabric for the outside of the bag.<br />

1. Parisville outer fabric with FMQ clamshell quilting, Allison glass inner fabric and a purple zip<br />
2. Jay McCaroll (center city? or the line before?) outer fabric with zigzag quilting and a dark gray zip<br />
3. Alexander Henry Mercer print with FMQ loops, inner fabric from Hobby Lobby, hot pink zip<br />
4. Hedgy outer fabric (forgot the designer, bought in Korea) with crisscrossed straight line quilting and a blue zip<br />
5. Map outer fabric (also from Korea) with grid quilting, rock'n'romance inner fabric and a purple zip<br />
6. Kona modern quilts print with wavy line quilting, blue zig-zig inner fabric, blue zip.<br />
<br />
A word of caution. Make sure you follow the instructions on how to position the zipper when sewing it to the bag panels. I spent about an hour carefully pinning all my zipper sandwiches only to realize after I sewed the first one that they were all in backwards! Oh well, at least I only had to unpick one and simply flip the zipper and repin the rest.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
Another fun tip that saves you time is to use some twill tape or ribbon for the side tabs instead of making them from fabric. I used up some twill tape from a recent Birch fabric order. I realized afterward that a quick glance at the bag and you may read bitch instead of birch. Ha, hopefully these girls have a sense of humor about it. I wouldn't mind having a bitchin' bag.</div>

The ladies loved the bags. It was just a small way to say thank you. I hope they realize how much the shower meant to me. Because hubs and I just moved to St Louis, we don't have many friends in the area and our families are too far away to plan a shower. If his coworkers hadn't thrown us a shower we simply wouldn't of had one. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This bag is perfect for handmade gifts for so many reasons. It is a versitile bag, perfect for makeup, colored pencils, nail polish kit, etc and can be made quickly. It is a great way to use some of the larger print fabric in your stash and all that scrap batting I know you have piled in a corner somewhere. I keep a bunch of zippers around in a multitude of colors so I can whip up a pouch or bag whenever I want. What is your go-to pattern for handmade gifts?</div>

This year I was lucky to participate in a flickr quilting bee, That Stash Bee where participants make two quilt blocks for another member shopping their own stash for just the right fabrics. Here's a round up of all the block I made for the rest of the year.</div>
<br />
<b>September: </b><a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2005/06/pineapple-blossom.html">Pineapple blossom</a> blocks for Michonne. She picked a great palette. I'm a sucker for purples. I love this block especially the star it makes when four blocks come together. A big quilt with this block is on my to do list.<br />

<br />
<b>October: </b>Katie asked for Halloween <a href="http://www.mccallsquilting.com/patterns/details.html?idx=8236">maple leaf blocks</a> from McCalls. These were so much fun and I can't wait to see the finished quilt. I loved finding the perfect center pieces. The froggy one is from a friend's grandmother's stash.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The second one has a Heather Ross print. Not sure why kids in costume are going to a parade of books but I endorse it. <span style="text-align: center;">PS.</span><span style="text-align: center;"> The skeleton fabric glows in the dark! </span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>November: </b>Toni (our bee hive mama) kindly gave me the instructions for Novembers blocks way ahead of time so I could get them to her before the babies come. She chose the <a href="http://www.cluckclucksew.com/2011/06/tutorial-july-star-blocks.html">July Star block</a> from Cluck Cluck Sew. These are made large and then you trim them down to size, always a good idea with bee blocks because everyone's quarter inch seam is always a touch different. She chose a patriotic color scheme which I found really refreshing. I love using bold colors. Plus I got a chance to use this darling sailboat 30s repro fabric in the center.</div>

Feels good to know I am done with my sewing related commitment for the year! I love picking out fabrics, trying new block designs, and sewing for others but HATE going to the post office. </div>
Marlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14802017567939327058noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4260150928767438131.post-47298631463328538872014-10-17T09:36:00.000-05:002014-10-17T09:36:15.967-05:00Two Girly Baby Quilts<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In less than two months I will have my hands (instead of my belly) full of triplet boys. I made them each a quilt which will be blogged about soon. After making all of the boy quilts I was really itching to make something super girly, so when I found out that a new friend had identical twin girls a few months earlier I just had to make some quilts for them.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I wanted the quilts to complement each other but not be too matchy-matchy. I went with a triangle theme. The first one is made up of equilateral triangles. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwh3hCcrMcxYVW880OfHSDa5kOeraQiyyNssKP96ogw57c1YxmANFDgI1_FNxHfWe4Pkx5ACSyizHyA-DQlh_fYLvXXrj4mavt3n0My0lEWsawBS_4cpcvYZlbEs4tQMQReL81HYvY1_w/s1600/20140916_182025.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwh3hCcrMcxYVW880OfHSDa5kOeraQiyyNssKP96ogw57c1YxmANFDgI1_FNxHfWe4Pkx5ACSyizHyA-DQlh_fYLvXXrj4mavt3n0My0lEWsawBS_4cpcvYZlbEs4tQMQReL81HYvY1_w/s1600/20140916_182025.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used up the last of my Simpatico fabric for this quilt and threw in a few other complementary prints. With light pinks, orange, yellow, and a hint of mint, the palette is very soft which really goes against my normal aesthetic. It was so hard not to throw some hot pink or electric blue in there.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmJbXjLwxZ2r8ilWW3riwIN3gl6UfAKmhtp31fnm1UgUpaxWRwfAjE2SO72gGuQx5YLXK1YQfuIH2-THUY8pmbTaBcacLpmFehX7MJTZHXM5ISz2Wy02Vv5pHSzXSvoUCJWYARaMyBTlk/s1600/20140916_182454.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmJbXjLwxZ2r8ilWW3riwIN3gl6UfAKmhtp31fnm1UgUpaxWRwfAjE2SO72gGuQx5YLXK1YQfuIH2-THUY8pmbTaBcacLpmFehX7MJTZHXM5ISz2Wy02Vv5pHSzXSvoUCJWYARaMyBTlk/s1600/20140916_182454.jpg" height="640" width="360" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I echo quilted the triangles which creates a beautiful grid and bonus stars at the junctions where 6 fabrics meet.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For the back I chose a world map print I picked up in Korea. It matches the colors on the front perfectly. I also appliqued an "M" for the baby so she can remember that THIS quilt is HERS and that her sister cannot have it.The binding is a blue polka-dot. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha7LvOiV0sdywMhUh6hphXV4CCLBXX6ZM3PZ1W8Si1qSIETpNmixHSyL9-dwE1uM54o_UYCIM-lxeVkp4_YkXGviq3OCkOmw4TfVTPnTc3D23EYC4tEo9i1UDXOi1YXBonqho3NwR9iaE/s1600/20140916_182112.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha7LvOiV0sdywMhUh6hphXV4CCLBXX6ZM3PZ1W8Si1qSIETpNmixHSyL9-dwE1uM54o_UYCIM-lxeVkp4_YkXGviq3OCkOmw4TfVTPnTc3D23EYC4tEo9i1UDXOi1YXBonqho3NwR9iaE/s1600/20140916_182112.jpg" height="640" width="360" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For the second quilt I used triangles and big hexagons to make a star pattern. I stuck with a similar color scheme: pink, yellow, and light blue, but couldn't help going a little bolder on the prints this time. Plus teapots!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgisHvTQcBE_AN6RJyrd1yvRzWudlgJ_OE1LslvXCbHO451BFOs4ic2YgHWkJ4klBUPKHtv6ZtHG6T3z7u8n9E2Y1Gtvd30Hc5KclopsJ_rT-HywqrIo860fxe8GP4HNWEpT-IpBegjPjY/s1600/IMG_20140827_082014.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgisHvTQcBE_AN6RJyrd1yvRzWudlgJ_OE1LslvXCbHO451BFOs4ic2YgHWkJ4klBUPKHtv6ZtHG6T3z7u8n9E2Y1Gtvd30Hc5KclopsJ_rT-HywqrIo860fxe8GP4HNWEpT-IpBegjPjY/s1600/IMG_20140827_082014.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One of the hexagons is framed in a blue stripe print so that you can really see the secondary star design. The rest of the blue is a little snowflake print. Because the hexagons were so big, I got a chance to use some of my larger scale prints. Love those big yellow flowers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS_ABXkppJemXlIveo7iB0kIvMCjTp-Z_o0urcwsUE0WN6KR3yXDfRMpBnPKLD6CpyL-2Ss-ZyDb4ARvKgLdCiioZvVTSInkJXrUQ6HLaPxbmO2vJ0auAWMGE51GIrF6CcJ57ZKYGyiRY/s1600/20140916_181900.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS_ABXkppJemXlIveo7iB0kIvMCjTp-Z_o0urcwsUE0WN6KR3yXDfRMpBnPKLD6CpyL-2Ss-ZyDb4ARvKgLdCiioZvVTSInkJXrUQ6HLaPxbmO2vJ0auAWMGE51GIrF6CcJ57ZKYGyiRY/s1600/20140916_181900.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Because I was dealing with a simpler patchwork I went bananas on quilting it. I chose to do some FMQ paisley feathers for the first time. I was emboldened by Angela Walters<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFMXfQ81ljI"> video tutorial </a> and baby quilts are the perfect place to practice designs. It created such a lovely texture and looks a lot harder than it was to execute. Just look at that texture. Mmmmm. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEja6opPDP_D63fYZXzecjzmY03lZ9LGFg6yQDTYNPuHy8ubREVl6LpVJHV9KYWRwjsJwvuMeM-qnkK2Os6UUcCafue5fk6WB10uv5joFe-SfJE-kSB0QHlw0xX0zYfpr8uFmu4g_sSmxdo/s1600/IMG_20140827_162302.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEja6opPDP_D63fYZXzecjzmY03lZ9LGFg6yQDTYNPuHy8ubREVl6LpVJHV9KYWRwjsJwvuMeM-qnkK2Os6UUcCafue5fk6WB10uv5joFe-SfJE-kSB0QHlw0xX0zYfpr8uFmu4g_sSmxdo/s1600/IMG_20140827_162302.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
For the back I chose some flea market fancy, once again appliqueing a "T" so that you can tell the quilts apart (I am hilarious). The binding is made of the same cross-stitch letter fabric that I used for the monogram applique.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjb5j1uAlN-NP1G8zQ5X3f0j8B42cBqdQBdoFOcfPUbJiDtb3DlpQ63hc0s1hwwTJSxRbNA8tREZJNHSHBBZ3xhxwzPQp-NtDhIgjGMjZ6e7GMP0Qd6RFtua9Gmx9B3BobG8B12VheYfuI/s1600/20140916_181949.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjb5j1uAlN-NP1G8zQ5X3f0j8B42cBqdQBdoFOcfPUbJiDtb3DlpQ63hc0s1hwwTJSxRbNA8tREZJNHSHBBZ3xhxwzPQp-NtDhIgjGMjZ6e7GMP0Qd6RFtua9Gmx9B3BobG8B12VheYfuI/s1600/20140916_181949.jpg" height="640" width="360" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now you can see that the back of the quilts are opposite of one another: blue with a cream binding, and cream with a blue binding.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxUxyqoT147DpS5ppf1vF7c_tes-1-VCZCJmANCRTXin6ul_NwlBkQFfKY01XsLyVsQIddUaNyG964AMppOeejqHEXKY0NgQbGL0SUeOhssfwZdaj3sbINlmnLCTH_S0Tw2TMhrD88RQM/s1600/20140916_182145.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxUxyqoT147DpS5ppf1vF7c_tes-1-VCZCJmANCRTXin6ul_NwlBkQFfKY01XsLyVsQIddUaNyG964AMppOeejqHEXKY0NgQbGL0SUeOhssfwZdaj3sbINlmnLCTH_S0Tw2TMhrD88RQM/s1600/20140916_182145.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The fronts of the quilts also go nicely together. I can't wait to see pictures of the little girls playing on their quilts.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqGNoH96f_Iz1sLvdRSHLc1ETe-yFgthS-9S5bEl5aJQVS5qiT84xA5XhypwpC5qCfkipsO3zQJRDlOS_4NKXzRnCcyxmiNzfk1MSN17HHn4AKHsmCKSQZQIHPSyXQ4E5Y_0sxZ89KCuE/s1600/20140916_182410.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqGNoH96f_Iz1sLvdRSHLc1ETe-yFgthS-9S5bEl5aJQVS5qiT84xA5XhypwpC5qCfkipsO3zQJRDlOS_4NKXzRnCcyxmiNzfk1MSN17HHn4AKHsmCKSQZQIHPSyXQ4E5Y_0sxZ89KCuE/s1600/20140916_182410.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>

You may recall the pouches I sewed up for the 2013 Stash Bash. I made one for a <a href="http://sewhungry.blogspot.com/2013/04/le-pouch-for-stash-bash.html">bag swap</a> and <a href="http://sewhungry.blogspot.com/2013/05/le-pouch-tutoriolito.html">two others </a>afterwards. This year I sewed up a medium sized pouch for my secret swap partner Jenn Thurston who runs the<a href="http://www.quiltedthimblecottage.com/"> Quilted Thimble Cottage</a> fabric shop. I used some fabric leftover from a quilt I made at the 2013 Stash Bash and pieced a little wonky star. The bottom is a gray grunge. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The stripes wrap around the back and I machine embroidered on both sides so she would forever be reminded of a great weekend. </div>

<br />
I filled the pouch with goodies including chocolate, twizlers, pens, post it notes, twine and washi tape.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPyRNR1BHpAU2y-am7JrMcPJeDMKMx54KBi8paFGcUwKSVKQ_SJVSmFKN5QzhO7RPBYZq-xGHz8yXY2fp68BoU2fJpJV9KqPuicz8FEArGEnd-i5FP4J4cK4J72psonoVLHEWFWnRpH3w/s1600/IMG_20140420_142529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPyRNR1BHpAU2y-am7JrMcPJeDMKMx54KBi8paFGcUwKSVKQ_SJVSmFKN5QzhO7RPBYZq-xGHz8yXY2fp68BoU2fJpJV9KqPuicz8FEArGEnd-i5FP4J4cK4J72psonoVLHEWFWnRpH3w/s1600/IMG_20140420_142529.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It barely fit in the pouch but that is just how it should be.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIWKGtMh3qzHFYCXJ1Ia-fmstJUfwXue_gwLbw2Dtui6tU4u59dzJZZJIzyDsNJw5RkmPkLF7jCstWlcZDDuPq7aq78Uvdw-QB7gghZWFPenmauoLu-vEY6tUnzAOti48PwjxvkvPmAr4/s1600/IMG_20140420_142434.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIWKGtMh3qzHFYCXJ1Ia-fmstJUfwXue_gwLbw2Dtui6tU4u59dzJZZJIzyDsNJw5RkmPkLF7jCstWlcZDDuPq7aq78Uvdw-QB7gghZWFPenmauoLu-vEY6tUnzAOti48PwjxvkvPmAr4/s1600/IMG_20140420_142434.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We got a mini charm pack of Kona solids at the Stash Bash. When I got home I couldn't wait to play with these perfect little squares. I decided to make another open-wide pouch (free Noodlehead tutorial) and send it to Chris (The Stash Bash Goddess Coordinator and puppy rearing queen) as a thank you for once again putting on a stellar retreat. The layout is a simple 4 x 7 grid on the front with a little hand-stitched embroidery. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2ISBdd8yWxoQ2TPXc8ePgwt4NO3ziT-L9j8H6tEaKiCdJPZBU43kG4dI1PhWe1oYip9nU1u3KGi3KdIE8ib-_6ECKLqWSOBPrhgkm3bKkLBxjWL9NH98hLJNd2HEa6RZ6gbn8pYyWXIA/s1600/IMG_20140506_080216.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2ISBdd8yWxoQ2TPXc8ePgwt4NO3ziT-L9j8H6tEaKiCdJPZBU43kG4dI1PhWe1oYip9nU1u3KGi3KdIE8ib-_6ECKLqWSOBPrhgkm3bKkLBxjWL9NH98hLJNd2HEa6RZ6gbn8pYyWXIA/s1600/IMG_20140506_080216.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The back is made up of a few coordinating prints:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
I failed photography 101 as you can see my shadow in most of the pictures. I also don't care one iota.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I just HAD to line the pouch in teapots:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Totally! The 2nd annual Stash Bash was amazing. Recap from the inaugural Stash Bash can be found <a href="http://sewhungry.blogspot.com/2013/04/stash-bashed.html">here</a>. Chris (aka Frecklemama) is my kind of event planner. She made the event so much fun while still being laid back and relaxing. The concept is sewing in a beautiful location...<br />

...in a huge room overlooking the lake. And you are with about 50 like-minded people who want nothing but to chat, sew and eat sweets. There were occasional breaks for meals (in between eating sweets) and a fabric shopping trip to the Scarlet Thread was optional. Like last year, I camped out in the back corner with Katie (<a href="http://kakorner.blogspot.com/">Katie's Korner</a>) and Elizabeth (<a href="http://www.dontcallmebetsy.com/">Don't Call Me Betsy</a>). We were missing <a href="http://crafternoondelightkat129.blogspot.com/">Kim</a> (who had to go and move to California which was tragic) but still managed to have loads of fun and get lots done. I pieced the top of my string-a-hex quilt (above pic), finished two totes (only took a pic of one), caught up on my bee blocks, and started cutting out a courthouse steps quilt. Not bad for a weekend!<br />

The swag haul from this year was seriously amped up from last year. But sadly I didn't take a picture of my goodies all together. But we got lots of fabric from Moda, Stash Fabric and elsewhere, an Olfa splash rotary cutter, an Omnigold square ruler, an official The Stash Bash screen printed tee and a lot more things that I don't remember seeing as I am writing this post months later. Everyone won prizes (I think at least twice) lottery style. I got some soak nail polish which lasts forever when you paint your nails. I also got another T-shirt with a sewing machine on it and it says "power tool" underneath. It is neon green and awesome.<br />

99.9% sure I am not making it to The Stash Bash in 2015 which makes me very sad, but I will have 4-5 month old triplets and apparently they won't be independent functional members of society yet. Plus, since I moved to St. Louis it is not a quick 3 hour drive to the retreat like it was in years past. As much as I may want a weekend away to relax, sew and catch up with old and new friends it is just not going to happen. Maybe 2016?? </div>

Wish I was British so I could say I'm on hols. I'll be back in 10 days tanner and well rested...or more likely sun-burnt and cranky. I was so excited for my trip that I stitched up a new beach bag to take with me.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOSj0dSO6sSasE2qYgVXNBiCP8pN2rthv9BXHzC-ZDSEsDu4eTt_eO1-0jdruJRBZUOWe4PUbCNpgN8agJqJJSabB0oUMA14s_O2Y-RdEh1Ad9c2d2DFlvTF7uIuS6t2a3Ph_l9XO2xI4/s1600/IMG_20140704_163918.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOSj0dSO6sSasE2qYgVXNBiCP8pN2rthv9BXHzC-ZDSEsDu4eTt_eO1-0jdruJRBZUOWe4PUbCNpgN8agJqJJSabB0oUMA14s_O2Y-RdEh1Ad9c2d2DFlvTF7uIuS6t2a3Ph_l9XO2xI4/s1600/IMG_20140704_163918.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The bag is enormous. It will easily hold everything I need to relax by the water. I used a free online tutorial from <a href="http://www.museofthemorning.com/museblog/2013/make-a-big-beautiful-beach-bag-tutorial/">Muse of the Morning</a>. </span><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #222222; font-family: inherit;">Overall a serviceable pattern and it came together fast. I cut all the pieces and interfaced them in an hour or two (taking my time to make sure the directional fabric was going the right way) and then I sewed it up the morning after. I used a medium weight interfacing with home dec fabric from Ikea on the outside and terry cloth on the inside. I used a bit of canvas on the straps for added interest. It does not stand up on its own but looks nice when filled. Consider using heavier interfacing if you want it to have more standing power. A strap </span><span style="color: #222222;">length</span><span style="color: #222222; font-family: inherit;"> of 22" perfectly fits over my shoulder.</span></span><br />
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I changed the pattern a little bit. I inserted a pocket into the body of the bag with a terry cloth scrap I had. This should prevent small things like my room keys from getting lost. One thing I wish this had were snaps to keep the bag closed on the sides or a zipper across the top. The bag opening is rather large. I may add some velcro.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">

Incidentally, would anyone be interested in a traveling iSpy fabric box? The iSpy fabrics are really fun but you usually don't want to buy a fat quarter of all these different and potentially weird fabrics that don't necessarily play nice with others. My idea is that the box could be sent around to different quilter/bloggers who are interested in making an iSpy quilt. They could fussy cut what they want from the box, add another fat quarter or two to replenish the stock, blog about it and then ship it off to the next person in the queue. Let me know in the comments if you are interested.</div>

It is so soft and makes the quilt extra snugly. But what does one do with all the odd shaped remnants left over? No brainer if it was backed with quilting cotton I would just throw the scraps into my scrap box and use for piecing later. But I don't like to mix my flannel or other fabric scraps up with my quilting cottons because I rarely (if ever) piece with a mixture of fabric types. And throwing them out is not an option because the flannel is still good! So I ended up with a pile of weird long rectanglish flannel scraps that I never used.<br />
<br />
My friend Cassie keyed me in on a great way to use up the flannel scraps - make reusable flannel baby wipes. These are a great option for when baby goes #1 because they are super absorbent so you only need one and they won't be sopping wet, so less diaper rash. Plus you can just throw them in the wash and reuse over and over. If you already cloth diaper or are considering it, these are a perfect accompaniment.<br />
<br />

<br />
There are tutorials already out there such as this one by <a href="http://sewmuch2luv.blogspot.com/2011/07/flannel-baby-wipes-tutorial.html">Sew Much 2 Luv</a>. But I thought I would just give you the TLDNR version.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1) Take two scraps of flannel and cut them into an 8" square or 9" or 10" or make it slightly rectangular. It doesn't much matter as long as the two pieces are the same size. Really I let the size of my scraps dictate the size of the wipe so that I was as economical as possible with the fabric. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
2) Sew them together right sides facing with a 1/4" seam leaving a 2-3" gap in the center of one of the sides. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
3) Snip off the excess fabric at each corner to remove some of the bulk</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
4) Turn them right side out and press taking care to press the opening down nicely</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
5) Topstitch around the square 1/8" from the edge making sure to stitch the opening closed. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfJdpBxkE-U-AS-iVu8P_r2OskHPlQJbC4ugadWA3-RAl0oNv2uH61qbLFxAmSE-McXwVvi-Tj8YOP-q6RglZ_sQW50KZaY5mfUFBxqb12l7422tC91lEAWuCvSzRjbfFwlOaCLywtfhQ/s1600/IMG_20140708_123041.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfJdpBxkE-U-AS-iVu8P_r2OskHPlQJbC4ugadWA3-RAl0oNv2uH61qbLFxAmSE-McXwVvi-Tj8YOP-q6RglZ_sQW50KZaY5mfUFBxqb12l7422tC91lEAWuCvSzRjbfFwlOaCLywtfhQ/s1600/IMG_20140708_123041.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
The top row were made with 8" squares and the bottom were made from 10", 10" and 9" squares.<br />
<br />
So go ahead and dig through your flannel leftovers and make a few for yourself or for a friend who is expecting. They take 5 minutes each (or less) and you can wrap them up with a pretty bow and be the star of the baby shower (not that these things are competitions, yeah right).Marlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14802017567939327058noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4260150928767438131.post-27881672555632679202014-07-08T10:00:00.000-05:002014-07-08T10:00:01.322-05:00Bee blocks<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Today's post is all about catching up on bee blocks. I'm a member of That Stash Bee, an online quilting bee where you use your stash to make blocks for the other hivemates each month. I like the challenge of searching through my stash for the perfect complementing fabrics. This has been particularly challenging because I haven't bought new fabric for months and I recently was without my sewing machine for about 2 months so I was a bit tardy on the May blocks.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
March - 8 darting bird blocks that were so pretty but uh...I didn't photograph before I mailed them... </div>

April - 8 churn dash blocks in brights with LV background. Made these at the Stash Bash retreat and sent them off to Ginny the bloggess behind <a href="http://fishcreekstudio.blogspot.com/">Fish Creek Studio</a>.</div>

July is my month and I am asking for Christmas in July!<span style="background-color: #fefefe; font-family: inherit; font-size: 14px; line-height: 18px;"> 2 Christmas themed 12.5" blocks out of squares. Either a 4-patch or a 9-patch AND a 16-patch or a 36-patch. </span><span style="background-color: #fefefe; font-family: inherit; font-size: 14px; line-height: 18px;">I mixed up some themed prints with other fabrics that fit in my color scheme. A sprinkling of ridiculous Christmas fabric such as the Chihuahua fabric below is strongly encouraged. I made one of each as examples:</span></div>

First up Korean textiles. First off, the quality of these fabrics are superb, soft and drape well just as you have come to expect from quilt-shop quality fabrics in the US and elsewhere. The Koreans are rivaling Japan in the cuteness factor. They had a great selection of novelty prints.</div>

Jars and Robots. If you look closely at the prints that make up the robots you will see a lot of "girly" prints which I think is a fun way to mash up a traditional boy icon with traditional girl prints and colors.</div>

And a perfect dot. The back one is white on yellow so it is hard to see but lovely and subtle in person. I really had to restrain myself from getting these in every color. I couldn't have packed my suitcase otherwise.</div>
<br />
All the Korean fabrics had selvedges in Hangul (the Korean alphabet). Now I am normally not a selvedge saver but you better believe I cut off all the selvedges to use in the future.<br />

<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then other fabrics which you can get in the US but not at these LOW LOW prices. It looked like they carried more of the last year's lines which was fun. I picked up a few random fat quarters:</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZ-hT_7GySqOZRjM7nYzfbKa93kHWO2640j_L_ysB6SP1B4NLtNKM04NU4avsZv0d_5h333NtDKtt4_V2DNKz7lV_vz4r4Wuk4XOr4PNiIMmWC4Q-0NBbjnHQWr_24PDWhD2Zd_n6uMR4/s1600/IMG_20140429_095110.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZ-hT_7GySqOZRjM7nYzfbKa93kHWO2640j_L_ysB6SP1B4NLtNKM04NU4avsZv0d_5h333NtDKtt4_V2DNKz7lV_vz4r4Wuk4XOr4PNiIMmWC4Q-0NBbjnHQWr_24PDWhD2Zd_n6uMR4/s1600/IMG_20140429_095110.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Some great basics:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLhD_rxpCNv_TOpMa-ARDBsUeiGWR-BM6-AWlml301GpmmwyN6kAdNPr4JQ14GbPzvB7GGgt4XF0HAZSSiodG1iYJVDoaKHOOXe8YoNy2NwBkXyFEBpJQUX0Mt4aLRSROb9ySa02qQJGA/s1600/IMG_20140429_095059.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLhD_rxpCNv_TOpMa-ARDBsUeiGWR-BM6-AWlml301GpmmwyN6kAdNPr4JQ14GbPzvB7GGgt4XF0HAZSSiodG1iYJVDoaKHOOXe8YoNy2NwBkXyFEBpJQUX0Mt4aLRSROb9ySa02qQJGA/s1600/IMG_20140429_095059.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Just an example of how good the pricing was, that fat quarter bundle of 9 FQs was only $10 (US).</div>
<br />
And a few more novelty prints: maps, lightning bugs, hedgehogs, geeky glasses, cross-stitch letters.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I mostly stuck to novelty prints because I thought that would help remind me more of my trip. I have already started using these fabrics and integrated them into my stash so look for them in upcoming projects!Marlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14802017567939327058noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4260150928767438131.post-89661154634021908552014-07-06T09:50:00.002-05:002014-07-06T09:50:33.956-05:00Korea Trip Part 3: Fabric stores in Seoul<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
First I went to <a href="http://www.korea4expats.com/article-fabrics-notions-dongdaemun.html">Dongdaemun fabric market</a> which is a HUGE 5-story building filled with fabric and notions of all kinds. It is mostly for garment sewing. I would love to see a Project Runway episode here. My plan to wander around aimlessly and peruse was shot for many reasons. 1) I had just walked around the Seoul zoo all morning and my feet were protesting. 2) This place was way too big to tackle in one afternoon. 3) It was packed full of stuff and people that it was intimidatingly hard to get around. I did manage to get one picture where I am trying my best to not look overwhelmed:</div>

Dongdaemun deserves a revisit and my next trip to Korea I will do it justice. I didn't even buy one thing because I was paralyzed with the sheer enormity of it all. Here is a post on <a href="http://blog.aclipse.net/teach-in-Korea/bid/96064/A-Crafty-Paradise-in-Korea-Dongdaemun-Fabric-Craft-Market">the fabric market </a>from another blogger who was braver than me and shot some amazing pics of the place.</div>

Fast forward a few days and I decided to go on a journey to Happy Quilt. A store that specializes in quilting fabrics which I found online while researching Korea beforehand. There is a great blog post by Johnnie and Angela which tells you how to get to <a href="http://johnnieandangela.blogspot.com/2011/08/new-happy-quilt.html">Happy Quilt.</a> I went by metro. It took about 90 minutes from Sinchon to the Jije station.</div>

wandering across rice paddies to the quilt shop which you can thankfully see from the station. It is way over there with the blue roof. In retrospect, I could have take the actual road which is just to the right of the field instead of walking through it like an ignorant foreigner. Again reference the Johnnie and Angela post I linked to for good directions on how to get to the shop.</div>

We made it to the shop. Quilters Mecca!! The shop carries many popular US designers both by the bolt and in mostly 1 yard cuts packaged in plastic (left side of pic) and all at $5 (US) a yard.</div>

Hubby found the Korean made quilting cottons (another reason I love him so) and I decided that I would mostly buy these since you cannot find them in the states. Plus they were all $4 (US) a yard!</div>

Outside the store with my extremely stuffed bag of loot. I bought about 40 yards of fabric for about $170 (US). You will have to wait until the next post to see what I got. If you are in Seoul it is definitely worth the trip to head down to Happy Quilt. They only take cash so make sure to bring lots of wons.</div>

Hey everyone! I am moving to St. Louis next week. Woot woot!! Hubby starts his Internal Medicine Residency/Infectious Disease Fellowship at Wash U. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In honor of leaving Alabama I decided to use up the rest of my Alabama and Auburn fabrics in a quilt for a coworker who is having a baby in August. For those of you who do not have the pleasure of understanding college football in Alabama, allow me to explain to the best of my ability (considering I am from the north), how important it is (to them). Your team is your religion. You must wear the colors. You must hate the other team and their fans. You must go all crazy-sports-religion come football season. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This couple live in a "house divided" - wife loves Alabama, husband is for Auburn. Normally these marriages end in tragic divorces or murders but these two seem to make it work somehow. This was a perfect way for me to use up all my fabric and make a "quilt divided":</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFOsKyp_gek6IyjicYpfSWBTq3bskTMt0sTsKQqh3ZByTiT_m2vAfhjd2kg3ipjMH9HcbyVRaAvh_yPnO5DX1aoLY2dh8aQWhoetHXNNwsYtjoTqjqOywXUxfSDxVQtsBkcNqjA1otWtk/s1600/IMG_20140213_192625.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFOsKyp_gek6IyjicYpfSWBTq3bskTMt0sTsKQqh3ZByTiT_m2vAfhjd2kg3ipjMH9HcbyVRaAvh_yPnO5DX1aoLY2dh8aQWhoetHXNNwsYtjoTqjqOywXUxfSDxVQtsBkcNqjA1otWtk/s1600/IMG_20140213_192625.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Fans of either team cannot feel comfortable seeing these two icons all cozied up with each other. I appliqued the Auburn logo on one patch and a cute elephant on another.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then I added some big strips of fabric to make columns for each school and sewed them together. It went together very quickly. Each school got equal representation on the front. The binding is a non-confrontational mustard yellow bike paths print which plays well with others.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVQwPMMjRri5WTtuVBZBDaEUQXhWrTQgQ2cTIF4_ZRZbo7e36nBSQoL0LXfPWzh4ipOJG2ygwdVVge-bCYJorAQjYFqyUF7m1wV_YBLsCmE89qFO0D1ihdZEmSYzD_wtUg9mk5mt1X8tA/s1600/IMG_20140214_212918.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVQwPMMjRri5WTtuVBZBDaEUQXhWrTQgQ2cTIF4_ZRZbo7e36nBSQoL0LXfPWzh4ipOJG2ygwdVVge-bCYJorAQjYFqyUF7m1wV_YBLsCmE89qFO0D1ihdZEmSYzD_wtUg9mk5mt1X8tA/s1600/IMG_20140214_212918.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
The back, which I neglected to get a photo of, is a cute multicolored print which is in no way affiliated with either school, can't play favorites here.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My coworker definitely got a kick out of this quilt. I wish her and her growing family the very best.</div>

I can't wait to see my block pop up in a few sampler quilts. The tutorial is free and on my blog. If you would like a go at the honeycomb block just clicky-poo <a href="http://sewhungry.blogspot.com/2012/08/honeycomb-quilt-block-tutorial.html">here</a>. I have made the block in several color schemes see below (full post <a href="http://sewhungry.blogspot.com/2012/08/bee-blocks-august-2012.html">here</a>).<br />

Please check out the SMS links above. There are many beautiful blocks to chose from and maybe you will be inspired to make your own sampler quilt. The best thing about a sampler quilt is you don't have to choose just one! If you use my block, I would love to see a picture of it. Please message me about it or tag me on instagram @sewhungry</div>

A week or two before I left for South Korea my hubs requested that I make a quilt for coworker of his. One of the fellows on his team was a sweet young woman named Sun Bean (cutest name ever) who really helped Juan feel at home in Korea. She took him to lunch and dinner many times and since she is his senior paid for everything. In Korea the seniormost member at the meal pays. No exceptions. Do argue. Just say thank you. Anyway, he wanted to repay Sun Bean for her kindness and she was recently married. A quilt seemed perfectly appropriate! Juan requested a quilt with a traditional Americana feel and I knew exactly what I wanted to do.</div>

Being short on time I decided to do some large 7" (final size) HSTs. I selected fabrics leftover from a salt air layer cake (Cosmo cricket for Moda which I won at last year's The Stash Bash) and mixed in some complementary prints and mirage almost solids (from connecting threads). The color scheme was muted(ish) in blue, red, yellow/gold and green.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The layout is a 6 x 8 grid with a 6" border. Normally I'm not a border-er but the busy prints and random layout here was screaming out for a border. I love the woven look of the blue print I chose. The back is a small-scale red flower print on a cream background. It was interesting, traditional, and calmed down the front of the quilt. The binding is some salt air yardage I also had. It is a multicolored floral print that ties everything together.</div>

I decided to hand-tie rather than quilt it. I had never hand-tied before and thought that would add to the overall traditional Americana look I was going for. I used 6 strands of a red DMC embriodery floss, meaning I didn't unravel the floss). I am so glad I looked up a few tutorials because it is a lot easier than I thought it would be. I was going to cut little pieces of floss and thread them individually through the quilt and tie as I go. But, it is so much easier to basically do a really wide baste stitch with the thread or yarn and then cut halfway in between each stitch and tie at the end. I can't find the specific tutorial I used by here is t<a href="http://thelastpiece.typepad.com/the_last_piece/2011/05/how-to-tie-a-quilt-a-tutorial.html">his tutorial </a>by The Last Piece which is essentially the same. </div>

I would use this technique again. It was a nice change from quilting. I wish I could have used bulkier yarn for the job but I had a hard time pulling the needle through when I tried. Any advice on that?<br />

Of course, when I go to Korea I realized I had inadvertently used a very traditional Korean color palette. See the painted architecture below. Even the blue border print echos some of the woodwork patterns seen in the traditional buildings here. Oh well. That is why in the end I chose to name the quilt Koreacana.</div>

Hello! Remember me? I did not intend to let the blog lapse for a month (and more) but I have been busy. I came back earlier this month from a 10 day trip to South Korea and thought I would share some of my experiences with you that tie in with sewing and quilting. Of course, through a quilter's eyes, everything can spur inspiration or remind you of something sewing related. This will be at least a 4 part series.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Korea traditional patchwork is pieced using a french-seam like technique so that the front and the bag is neat and functional. The patchwork is usually abstract, wonky and with a lot of negative space. Very pretty! You can purchase these textiles in Insadong or other crafty/touristy areas in Seoul. They are traditionally used to cover food and other household duties.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<b>Quilt show in Insadong:</b> There was a quilt show going on in the basement of one of the buildings in Insadong. I wouldn't have even noticed it if it wasn't for this sign:<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It was only a few quilts but they were spectacular! I apologize I do not have the credits for the artist who made these quilts on hand. I will try to find out her information. These were all made by one woman in Korea.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The background was completely pieced from diamonds and then the curved shapes were appliqued on top. So much work went into this. I cannot fathom it.</div>
